The NWA Bike & Business Community Rallies Around 10-Year Old Hewitt Sluyter in His Battle Against Cancer

Springdale, AR – More than two dozen bike groups, community organizations, and businesses from across NWA are coming together to support Hewitt Sluyter’s fight against cancer. They’re asking the community to join the fight at the “Do It For Hewitt” bike event on Tuesday, June 21 in Downtown Springdale.

Hewitt Sluyter is 10 years old and just finished his 4th grade at Shaw Elementary. Last month he was rushed to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock for a surgery to remove a baseball-sized tumor found in his brain. He has since been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer classified as BCOR altered embryonal malignancy.

The Sluyter family is a beloved part of the Springdale community and the biking community. Hewitt’s parents Jared and Christen are avid athletes and can be found volunteering, competing, or cheering on their children at many of the cycling events in Northwest Arkansas. Jared coaches a local high school cycling team, and Christen recently completed the Iron Man 70.3 triathlon in Chattanooga Tennessee. They’ve done so much for the biking community. Now the biking community is showing up in a big way to support this family.

“Do It For Hewitt” is a bike event like none other and a fundraiser for Hewitt and his family. It takes place on the Summer Solstice and is intended to raise awareness for Hewitt’s cancer, raise funds for Hewitt's treatment and cheer him on as he begins his road to recovery. The community is encouraged to come out and ride with them, cheer them on and make a donation.

“Do It For Hewitt” is a free event. Details are as follows:
