MONARCH “POP UP” PARK IN DOWNTOWN SPRINGDALE FOR PUBLIC ENCOUNTER WITH ENDANGERED BUTTERFLIES ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

Springdale, AR – The Downtown Springdale Alliance will host a Monarch “Pop Up” Park at Turnbow Park in Downtown Springdale on Thursday September 29 from 5:30-7:30. The public is invited to learn more about the endangered Monarch Butterfly, its habitat, and its yearly pitstop in Springdale during its migration from Canada to Mexico.

• What: A pop-up park encouraging visitors to engage with Monarch butterflies

“The monarch butterfly is one of the natural wonders of Springdale,” says Jill Dabbs, Executive Director of the Downtown Springdale Alliance. “We are incredibly excited to invite our community to ‘encounter the endangered’ in a pop-up park right in the middle of Downtown Springdale. We all need to learn how to can make our area a pollinator-rich, butterfly-friendly environment for these endangered butterflies.”

At the Pop-Up Park visitors can see the Monarch in its various stages of life amidst locally-sourced milkweed plants and participate in several activities. Details are as follows:

• The butterflies will be released at 5:30PM, weather permitting

• A Monarch Parade throughout Turnbow Park will take place starting at Shiloh Square at 6:30PM.

• Wing pickup will begin at 6PM at the entrance of Shiloh Square. The first 50 children to arrive will receive free butterfly wings. Wings can also be purchased for $10.

• Following the parade visitors are encouraged to spend time in the Pop-Up Park and enjoy the live music during the LIVE! at Turnbow outdoor concert.

• The Shiloh Museum of Ozark History will be onsite to host a milkweed seed giveaway

• Sacred Hollow Farm Booth will host a Build Your Own Bouquet

• Kid friendly activities will be available.

The Monarch Pop Up Park is made possible thanks a variety of local organizations including LISA Academy, Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, Master Gardeners of Washington County, Washington County Extension Service, Sacred Hollow Farm and Illinois River Watershed Partnership.
